Description:  This course examines the theory and practice of multiculturalism in public service settings. It includes a discussion of educational, social, legal, and ethical issues in multiculturalism, studies the impact of one’s cultural memberships on personal and professional functioning, and develops cultural competence in professionals who work with culturally diverse populations.

Methods of instruction include discussion, experiential activities, and reflective practices

Honors Graduate Assistantship 2010-2011-Accepting Applications

Honors Program Graduate Assistantship

The Honors Program has one graduate assistantship position with the possibility of two for the 2010-2011 academic year for qualified full-time SLU graduate students who will be completing courses during the 2010-2011 academic year.  The graduate assistantship contract is from August 15, 2010 to May 15, 2011 and includes tuition remission, health insurance, and a monthly stipend.  Twenty hours of work per week are required. It is also highly recommended that applicants be available to work part-time as graduate student workers during this summer starting May 17, 2010.

General Academic Advisor (GA) Responsibilities

The graduate assistant’s duties will primarily involve advising undergraduate honors students (helping with course selection, auditing student files, connecting students with resources, and assisting with course registrations).  Other responsibilities may include: assisting with clerical tasks, reviewing scholarship applications, researching and initiating new programs, organizing student activities, and attending recruitment events.

Applicants should display strong organizational and communication skills, be attentive to detail, possess a personable manner, and work comfortably with a diverse group of people.
 
Preferred experience includes Microsoft computer programs; familiarity with the Banner software system and SLU undergraduate programs; advising and/or counseling; and public speaking.

Looking for Public Policy Students to help with registration for ULI St. Louis event on May 6.  This is a great way to meet regional leaders in St. Louis.  For more information on the program as well as a list of attendees, go to StLouis.uli.org.

The Graduate Student Association Representative serves as the liaison for the students in the Department of Public Policy Studies in the Graduate Student Association (GSA). The Representative is required to attend the General Assembly meetings that occur once a month, four times per semester. GSA funding for the department is contingent upon the Representative’s attendance at these meetings. Additionally, the representative is required to work on either the Spring Research Symposium Committee or the Awards Committee.

Internship Announcement

INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics/Consumer Expenditure Survey/Branch
of Research and Program Development has a full-time summer internship
position available.  The Consumer Expenditure surveys program consists
of two surveys, the quarterly Interview Survey and the Diary Survey,
which provide information on the buying habits of American consumers.
The survey data are collected for the Bureau of Labor Statistics by the
U.S. Census Bureau.

Description:
The intern position provides methodological research support for current
and planned research projects.  Possible projects may include analyzing
the use of global versus detailed expenditure questions; analyzing the
effect of telescoping in the Consumer Expenditure Interview Survey;
reviewing the survey instrument for candidate questions to be asked in a
different mode and developing alternative wording; contributing to the
design of a web survey instrument; analyzing Contact History Instrument
(CHI) paradata; analyzing the impact of new telephone administration
procedures; and helping with the planning and coordination of upcoming
workshops.

You will assist in study development and design; review questionnaires,
data files, documentation and reports; use SAS to conduct basic data
analysis, including production of frequencies, crosstabs, means, and
regression analysis; summarize quantitative and qualitative research
findings; and respond to ad-hoc data requests.

A strong interest in survey methodology, statistics, sociology,
psychology, economics, or other related fields and familiarity with SAS,
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are a plus.  You should be detail-oriented,
have excellent communication and writing skills, be able to handle
multiple projects, and work collaboratively on a project team.

Qualifications:
This position is in the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP).  A
person in the STEP program is under a temporary assignment.

To be eligible you MUST:
 1) be enrolled in an accredited school and recommended by a school
official;
 2) be at least 16 years old;
 3) meet qualification and security requirements; and
 4) be a U.S. citizen.

This position will be paid at the GS-5 grade level, which has a starting
rate of $16.33 per hour.

Available Funding and Request for Proposals

The Leonard Wood Institute (http://www.leonardwoodinstitute.org),
located at the University of Missouri Technology Park in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, has issued the attached RFP for a total of $9 million in available funding.

The initial deadline is April 21 for white paper submissions. From the initial submissions, a select group will be invited to submit full proposals by June 29. The potential areas include sciences, IT, psychology, criminology, among others. They encourage collaborations including partnerships with private companies as well as other government entities such as the St Louis district Corps of Engineers. Technology transfer is also part of the RFP.

This Request for Proposals (RFP) for Fiscal Year 2010 is for applied research projects in Training-Based Research in Military Consequence Management. The Leonard Wood Institute (LWI) is seeking to provide funding for projects that will lead to advanced capabilities in the fields of force protection, military law enforcement, military engineering, chemical-biological defense and training, explosive hazard detection, and non-lethal weapons. Projects will begin in 2010 and will continue through September 30, 2011. The funds for these projects are provided to the Leonard Wood Institute by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) under the provisions of Cooperative Agreement # W911NF-07-2-0062.
