Volunteer-St. Louis County Point-in-Time Homeless Census 1/23/10

Posted in General on December 30th, 2009 by PSamuels – Comments Off

Mark your calendars!  The St. Louis County Division of Homeless Services will be conducting a census of our homeless residents on Saturday, January 23rd.    This census serves as a valuable tool in evaluating the homeless population that is living on the street so their needs may be identified and addressed.

We were very pleased with the volunteer turnout for the last census and are hoping for another great group this year.  We have made a few changes from last year, one of the most obvious is the change from a midweek evening count to a daytime count, which will be on a Saturday.   Volunteers will be meeting at one location and we will provide training prior to the start of the census.

Tentatively, the schedule is:
8:30 a.m.         Registration
9:00 a.m.         Volunteer Training & Team Coordination
10:30 a.m.       Census Begins  (We expect the census to run no later than 3:00 p.m.)

We need your help!  If you are interested in volunteering, we would love to have your help!  Please contact me at aholak@stlouisco.com or (314) 615-0379.    I will ensure you receive information about the day of the census as it approaches.

Thank you for your ongoing interest in serving our less fortunate neighbors.  In difficult economic times such as these, the need is ever present.  Please join us for the census…because everyone counts!

Doctoral Assistantship Announcement

Doctoral Assistantship Announcement

The College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities at Clemson University is accepting applications for five three-year assistantships for the pursuit of the Ph.D. degree in Planning, Design and the Built Environment.  The fellowship provides a stipend of $18,800 payable per year plus tuition, and may be renewed for up to two years.

I would like your help in locating superior students who might be interested in this opportunity for support of their doctoral studies.  The diversity of our faculty, who have advanced degrees in applied economics, architecture, construction management, civil engineering, history, landscape architecture, parks, recreation and tourism, planning, political science and urban geography allows students to pursue a variety of research interests.  The objective of the program is to prepare a new generation of academics and professionals to deal with the diverse and complex issues relating to the next round of human  development. The program is interdisciplinary drawing a core from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and construction science. It is expected that graduates of this program will be well prepared to address increasingly complex issues relating to human settlement patterns and the built environment.  I hope you will share it with students who are or might be considering application to a doctoral program for the fall semester of 2010.

Advocacy Communications Internship

Posted in Employment/Internship, General on December 4th, 2009 by PSamuels – Comments Off

Advocacy Communications Internship

Missouri Votes Conservation (MVC) is seeking an intern for the spring of 2010 to support communications around our legislative advocacy work.

MVC is a non-partisan, statewide nonprofit organization that advocates for pro-environment legislation and political candidates in Missouri. We engage in lobbying on behalf of state-level environmental and conservation policies on a range of issues, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, factory farming, and water quality.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in learning more about the legislative process in Missouri, about nonpartisan advocacy, and about statewide environmental issues.

The intern will:

• Assist staff in tracking environmental legislation of  interest

• Draft weekly summaries of legislative updates for website  (www.movotesconservation.org) and emails (includes learning to use web-based email-blast software)

• Assist with planning of Conservation Lobby Day (Feb. 3 in Jefferson City), such as scheduling appointments, editing fact sheets, coordinating logistics

• Perform office tasks as assigned, such as data entry to manage our membership database, assisting with mailings, and phone calls

Qualified candidates should possess strong written and oral communication skills (especially writing for email and website content), and be able to work independently. Interest in environmental issues is desirable; knowledge of the legislative process is helpful. We have a small staff and are seeking a motivated person to work as part of the team.

The intern is expected to work at MVC’s offices (in Delmar Loop), approximately 15 hours per week from January to May (preferably 3 days/week, but can be tailored to your schedule). This is an unpaid position; however college credit can be obtained depending on your college or university’s requirements.

Please send cover letter and resume ASAP to Martine Wisotsky by December 14 at mwisotsky@movotesconservation.org.
