Jewish Community Relations Council Seeks Environmental Intern

Posted in Employment/Internship on August 18th, 2009 by admin – Comments Off

Environmental Intern for Jewish Environmental Initiative (JDEI), a Committee of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC)

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) is the public affairs arm of the organized Jewish community. JCRC informs, collaborates, advocates and mobilizes the community to take action to address issues of importance to both the Jewish and general communities. JCRC is seeking a student to work as an Environmental Intern to work with its environmental committee, known as the Jewish Environmental Initiative (JEI). JEI works to encourage all members of the Jewish community to take an active role in caring for the earth by providing education, advocacy and resources to Jewish groups and sponsoring events in the larger community promoting environmental issues. The intern should be available to work 10 hours a week during the Fall 2009 semester.

The Environmental Intern would potentially be involved in a variety of projects. The work would most likely include helping to plan events scheduled to take place in the Fall of 2009 focused on the environment. These events include working in conjunction with a national effort entitled “Fighting Poverty With Faith: A Week of Action” (FPWF). The FPWF effort for 2009 will focus on green jobs and the need to promote green pathways out of poverty. JEI will be putting on a local event as part of this effort. The intern’s role would include helping to mine existing relationships with organizations JCRC/JEI has worked with in the past and helping to discover potential new relationships with organizations we have not worked with previously. Outreach will be needed to secure co-sponsors for the event and to secure agencies, private businesses, and educational institutions to work with JCRC/JEI on this event.

In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to help get a new environmental program up and running for JEI. We are in the process of forming a teen JEI group that would involve teens planning environmental activities and preparing presentations throughout the community on the importance of living in an environmentally conscious way. The intern will work with the steering committee of this new group and help in the planning of its activities and programs.

Other activities of the intern could include doing environmental research to assist us in our advocacy work on the environment and assisting in applying for grants to help fund the work of the committee. The intern will be supervised by the JCRC’s Director of Domestic Issues/ Social Justice.
