Our first big event of the year will focus on the efforts of Grand Center, Inc. (GCI)- a not-for-profit agency (with some quasi-governmental powers) that is facilitating the revitalization of the Grand Center arts and entertainment district- right in SLU’s backyard. Ken Christian, Director of Real Estate Development, will talk about the organization, his role with GCI, past progress, and development expected to occur over the next 18 months.

After the official meeting (for those who can stay), we’ll walk over to Jazz at the Bistro to talk, snack, drink, and debate.

If you like what you see and want to stay involved in SLUUPA for the rest of the year, membership is only $10.

A big thanks to Jonathan Roper (our new treasurer) who did so much work to put this all together!!

It’s not official yet (we’re still trying to work out all the details), but we’re hoping to have our next SLUUPA event on Friday, September 25th at 5:30PM in Tegeler Hall.

We’re going to provide FREE PIZZA this time so make sure to leave time in your calendar!

At the first SLUUPA meeting of the semester, held Friday 8/28/09, officers for the current school year were elected.

The new officers are:

• President – Anne Stevenson
• Vice President – Dawn Griffin David
• Secretary – Dan Burghoff
• Treasurer – John Roper
• Representative- Adriana Bates

SLUUPA meets every 2nd Friday of each month, although dates may vary depending upon the schedule of an invited speaker.  Save the following dates this semester:

Join our facebook group (just search for SLU Urban Planning Association) to keep up on educational and social events that you might be interested in attending. There is already a ULI (Urban Land Institute) Happy Hour this Thursday evening (August 27th) at 5:30 PM that you might be very interested in! See www.stlouis.org for more details.

We have volunteers to run for President and Vice President so far, but we still need people for Treasurer, Secretary, and Representative. (Of course, if you are interested in pres or vice pres you’re more than willing to run for those too!) None of the jobs require a huge time commitment, just some enthusiasm and perhaps a little paperwork. If you want a copy of the “official” duties or have any other questions, please email Anne for more information.

Elections are scheduled to take place at our first meeting this Friday at 5:30PM in Tegeler Hall.

The first Fall 2009 event of the SLU Urban Planning Association (SLUUPA) will be held Friday, August 28th from 5:30pm to 6:30pm.  At this meeting we’ll elect officers and talk about events and/or guest speakers the members would like to see in the coming year.  The meeting will be in Tegeler Hall – the room number to be announced next week.
