Second, the free virtual issue of the collection of papers honoring H. George Frederickson is available for download at the web page.

In addition, there is a reminder and specific dates listed for the 2013 PMRC in Madison, Wisconsin.

Finally, a special thanks to all of you who responded to the PMRA survey that was fielded this fall. We have initial results and will be looking at the best format for distributing them to members. We would like to take some time to synthesize what we see in them and prepare a summary of the findings for members as well. One thing we do know from our initial review is that there continue to be many challenges with renewing JPART subscriptions/memberships. Even drawing only from those of us in formal leadership roles in the association, we have assembled quite a number of “horror” stories about our problems. Feel free to add yours to the collection (if you didn’t already do so through the survey) by sending them directly to me. We are going to be taking this up with Oxford *very* soon.

Thanks and best wishes,

Arts & Economic Prosperity IV: Volunteer Opportunity & Job Description

Americans for the Arts has partnered with the Regional Arts Commission (RAC) and over 200 other organizations across the United States to conduct Arts & Economic Prosperity IV, a vital study that will document the impact of the nonprofit arts and cultural industry in the St. Louis region. We are seeking volunteers to aid and facilitate an important segment of the study, the Audience Expenditure Surveys.

These customized findings for St. Louis City and County will demonstrate the impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences on the economy, specifically:

The total dollars spent by local nonprofit arts and culture organizations.

The total dollars spent by audiences as a direct result of their attendance at arts and culture events in Saint Louis City and County.

The number of full-time equivalent jobs supported by arts spending.

The amount of resident, household income—including salaries and wages—generated by arts spending.

The amount of local and state government tax revenues generated by arts spending

Audience Expenditure Surveys:
For 2011, RAC will be conducting and collecting over 1,500 surveys from various arts and culture events throughout St. Louis City & County. The projected goal is to collect up to 50 surveys for each event RAC’s volunteer survey team attends. These events are generally considered to be one evening of a performing arts performance (theatre, dance, music) or a gallery opening, or even a festival or fair. Some past events include surveying before a performance at the MUNY Theatre, Shakespeare Festival, a Jazz at the Bistro Concert, a Contemporary Art Museum exhibition opening and many more! The Economic Impact Study Coordinator will schedule and coordinate all arts and cultural events for 2011. To find out about upcoming surveying opportunities, volunteers will be able to view and access the calendar of scheduled survey events through the Arts & Cultural Events Google Calendar link provided by the Economic Impact Study Coordinator upon volunteer application acceptance.

Volunteer Job Description:
All volunteers should possess an outgoing personality with the ability to approach strangers in a friendly and professional manner. Volunteers will provide the audience members with a pleasant experience at all times, even if an audience member declines to take the survey. In many ways this volunteer opportunity is similar to a market researcher position, so those interested in that type of work should apply! All volunteers will be dressed in a professional manner and will act as a representative of the Regional Arts Commission and Americans for the Arts at each arts and cultural event.

Since this is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, we have been able to provide compensation in the form of complimentary tickets to any ticketed event that the volunteer surveys. Please note that some of the scheduled events are free and open to the public so volunteers may receive other tokens of appreciation for their service. A week before the scheduled event each volunteer will receive a reminder email of their upcoming survey event that will include the following information: scheduled event date, the time volunteers are expected to arrive and survey, the address of the event, parking information and the name of the point person who will be providing all survey materials at the scheduled event.

NEW DOCUMENTARY “THE PRUITT-IGOE MYTH” AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC SCREENINGS

The critically acclaimed documentary “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” is now available for public screenings at colleges, universities, and museums. Touching on diverse subjects such as urban studies, African American history, public policy, city planning, and architecture, “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” will have broad appeal on campuses, in academic departments, and in museums nationwide.

“The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” explores the short life of the Pruitt-Igoe housing development, which was opened in 1954 to meet the public housing needs of an overcrowded city. Two decades later, with its highly-publicized demolition, Pruitt-Igoe became a potent international symbol of failure, a failure that has been used to critique Modernist architecture, attack public assistance programs, and stigmatize public housing residents. The film attempts to reassess the complex history of Pruitt-Igoe within the larger post-War context of segregation, poverty, and urban population decline.

In the two months since its premiere, “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” has received very positive reviews from academics and the film press. Recently the film received a glowing review in “Variety,” which can be read via the following link:

http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117944797/

Critic Dennis Lim also praised the film, calling “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” an “intelligent meditation on the decline of American cities.” Similarly, “ReadyMade” magazine’s Alexa Fornoff stated, “As heartbreaking as it is heartwarming, the story of the Pruitt-Igoe residents gave me an entirely new perspective on the era than from what I had come to know through history books.” Recently, the film also was
featured on PBS Newshour’s Art Beat:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/art/blog/2011/05/the-rise-and-fall-of-an-architectural-myth.html

If you believe you would like to see “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth” at your institution, we would be happy to discuss possible screening dates for fall semester, screening fees, and other logistics. Because we recognize the complications of university budgeting, we can work with you to allow for payment either before or after the turn of the next fiscal year (or both) to provide flexibility for your department. If you are interested in learning more about “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth,” please visit our website and view our trailer at www.pruitt-igoe.com, or you can find us on Facebook. On our website, you can also click on “Arrange a Screening” for more information about college and university screenings. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact co-producer Brian Woodman at brian@pruitt-igoe.com.

The big new trend in urban development is Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) – mixed-use residential and commercial development focused around transit that seeks to encourage transit ridership and dense, walkable livable neighborhoods. Examples of TOD are touted in Washington, D.C. and Portland, but what about St. Louis? What are the challenges and opportunities for transit-oriented development in our region? Our panelists will discuss current opportunities for development around transit and a mid-town trolley, as well future markets and challenges.

Post-Doctoral Fellows to Be Awarded
The Office of the Vice President Frost Campus announces creation of three two-year post-doctoral fellow positions effective August 2011. One position will be awarded on a competitive basis to teams of current Saint Louis University faculty researchers to develop or expand research in each of the following interdisciplinary fields: Intercultural Studies, Social Justice and STEM-Plus. A brief statement describing each of these research areas is included as an attachment. Funding for the fellow will be competitive based on discipline and will include health insurance.

The University is interested in developing novel interdisciplinary research across Departments and Colleges. These fellowships are intended to assist Saint Louis University researchers in building institutional capacity and training future faculty in emerging areas of such research. Please note that currently funded research projects are not eligible for consideration.

Selection committees convened by the Vice-President Frost Campus and Associate Vice President for Graduate Education will determine the recipient research program in each of the three areas and will assist the Saint Louis University faculty who receive the awards in their recruitment efforts to fill the post-doctoral positions. The Saint Louis University faculty judged to have the most meritorious proposal will make the final decision regarding the post-doctoral fellow to be hired for their particular research project.

Applications of no more than three single-spaced pages are due to the Vice President’s office in DuBourg Hall Room 450 by 5:00 p.m. on May 25, 2011. Electronic submissions should be sent to dcarlin1@slu.edu. Submissions are to include the following:

A brief abstract of no more than 750 words describing the research project with
an emphasis on the interdisciplinary questions addressed and an explanation of
how a post-doctoral fellow will advance the research project.
A summary of the research methodology.
Projected outcomes of the two-year project including publication and external
funding potential.
Curriculum vitae for each Saint Louis University researcher.

Awardees will be required to provide an annual report on the fellow’s and research team’s activities and to participate in a special panel discussion at the Graduate Research Symposium each of the two years of the award period. Awardees will be announced by June 6 and recruitment announcements will be developed by June 10 with a deadline of July 15 for applications. Starting date will be after August 1 based on the fellow’s availability and the research team’s agenda. Please address questions to Diana Carlin, Associate Vice President for Graduate Education at dcarlin1@slu.edu.

INTERCULTURAL STUDIES

Intercultural Studies is an interdisciplinary field devoted to the inquiry of what happens when different cultures meet. In its theoretical and conceptual framework, research on interculturality draws on many disciplines, including history, anthropology, sociology, psychology, communication, linguistics, literature, art, theology/religious studies, philosophy, and political science. It endeavors to understand difference by investigating how members of interacting cultures treat their own systems of meanings as natural and self-evident, and how these differing frames of reference produce different perceptions of reality that shape attitudes and behaviors generated by contact with otherness. The goal is to gain the ability to interpret each culture in its own terms, and not through the normative assumptions that the interpreters themselves bring to their analysis.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Although no one set definition of social justice exists, for the purposes of this proposal, the study of social justice uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand justice, equity and sustainability across multiple and intersecting systems – human, environmental, political and economic – and to develop various levels of systemic interventions and outcomes, globally, regionally and locally. The goal of social justice study is to understand and influence dynamic systems through factors which equitably and sustainably respond to the needs of humans and the environment.

STEM-PLUS

Numerous global challenges that society will face in the 21st century (climate change, shortages of food and clean water, alternative and renewable energy, etc.) will find a large portion of their solution through research in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Although the technological challenges may be sorted out through multidisciplinary research teams in traditional STEM areas, the implementation of comprehensive solutions to any of these problems will necessarily reach beyond STEM and include academic researchers from the full spectrum of scholarly inquiry. This interface of traditional STEM research with scholars from the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Law, Public Policy, Education and other areas of academic inquiry is the basis for the targeted research effort Saint Louis University refers to as STEM-Plus.
