Spring 2010 Semester Internship

The Center for Immigrant Healthcare Justice (CIHJ) seeks a college-level intern for       its  St. Louis office.  This is an unpaid internship beginning the week of January 18 and lasting until May 7 (16 weeks), and the ideal candidate would be available to work 15 – 20 hours per week.  Attendance at some evening and weekend meetings and/or events may be required.  This position reports to the Assistant Director. 

CIHJ is a 501(c)3 organization committed to public education and advocacy in support of equitable access to the healthcare system for U.S. immigrants.  We seek to eliminate all barriers to access for these hard-working members of society.  We work in solidarity with immigrants and invite citizens and immigrants to work together for systemic change. 

CIHJ has begun an initiative to help extend Medicaid and CHIP coverage to lawfully residing immigrant children and pregnant women in five states by 2011:  Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the assistant director to:

             º   Conduct research online to identify potential organizational partners in 
                  five states, and maintain database of contact information.

            º   Track relevant budget and healthcare legislation in five states, prepare brief summaries of current policies in five states on covering children under Medicaid and CHIP, and translate into effective 1-2 page hand-outs for grassroots use.

 

             º   Update the CIHJ website to reflect strategic plan.

             º   Draft monthly email newsletters

  • Research funding opportunities, including grants, and assist with preparing application materials.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers to assist with data entry,  mailings, and other activities as needed.
  • Help devise strategy to distribute and collect additional signature cards for the CIHJ Solidarity Campaign, with a focus on university outreach. 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with data entry and regular maintenance of CIHJ national database.
  • Assist with website maintenance.
  • Assist with various office tasks as needed, including copying, mailing, and phoning. 

Qualifications:

  • Working understanding of basic governmental policy areas of healthcare and immigration.
  • Ability to communicate CIHJ’s mission clearly and concisely to new colleagues, potential donors, and grassroots supporters.
  • Proficiency in use of internet, email, and standard office applications (MS Word, MS Excel).
  • Ability to recruit, supervise, and motivate volunteers.
  • Works well as a team member, open to flexible hours, and committed to socially conscious advocacy.
