Truman Scholarship

Hello!

I hope this email finds you well and that your semester is coming along nicely.  I wanted to pass along some information regarding the Truman Scholarship in the hopes that you will share it with your faculty and students.  The Truman Scholarship is for students who have a desire to be “change agents” and who plan to pursue a graduate degree in a field relating to public service.  There is a particular emphasis placed upon a desire to work with public policy, but students from any major who wish to pursue a career in public service are encouraged to apply.  The Truman Scholarship awards students up to $30,000 for their graduate studies.

To apply, students must be full-time students in their junior year, must be a U.S. citizen, and must have a strong record of community/public service.  There is no required GPA since this is a public service scholarship rather than an academic scholarship, but most recipients have around a 3.5 GPA.  Students must receive an institutional endorsement to have their application sent to the Truman Scholarship review panel.  The application and endorsement process is handled by the institution’s faculty representative.  SLU’s Truman faculty representative is Dr. Elizabeth Callahan, honors program director.  Any student interested in applying must contact her (ecallah2@slu.edu) in order to register for the scholarship application.

I have attached a folder containing the following information which may be helpful to students interested in applying:

2009-2010 Truman Scholarship Bulletin of Information
“Are you a potential Truman scholar?” check list
Sample Truman application
Policy proposal form
Letter of Recommendation forms

Since the Truman requires an institutional endorsement, the Honors program has set an internal deadline of Friday, January 15, 2010 for all application materials.  Students must have all their materials completed and submitted by this deadline in order to be considered for the institutional nomination.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know and I will be happy to help.  A member of our office attended a Truman Scholarship workshop earlier this fall where the Truman Scholarship Executive Director presented and she would be happy to meet with any student who had questions.  I would also encourage students to explore the Truman Scholarships website www.truman.gov for more detailed information on the scholarship and application process.

Thank you and enjoy the holidays,
